What are you waiting for? You have always wanted to kayak and this is the year to learn! Many beginners believe that whitewater kayaking requires courage and skill beyond their means. Others may just hop into a kayak and head down river with no real instruction, often resulting in a bad experience.
This is where Utah Kayak School comes in. Our ACA Certified Whitewater kayaking instructors want to help you build your framework for becoming a skilled and confident paddler. We accomplish this by introducing you to the fundamental body mechanics, paddle strokes and down-river skills needed to be successful – all in safe and flatwater environment.
Just like you wouldn't build a house on a poor foundation, a solid skill set can allow you to achieve your goals for kayaking. So whether your desire is freestyle kayaking, steep creeking, or enjoying the beauty and solitude of western rivers, we will help you lay the foundation that you need to enjoy it all!

Meet the Instructors
James Baucum
ACA Certified Whitewater Instructor
James started kayaking in Eastern Tennessee in the mid 1990's. In 1996 he moved to Salt Lake City to learn to ski and investigate western whitewater. While in Utah he worked as sales manager for a local whitewater shop and did part time kayak instruction. In 2000 he became certified by the American Canoe Association to teach whitewater kayak from Four Corners River Sports in Durango, CO.
From 2000 to 2003 James worked as lead whitewater instructor for California Canoe and Kayak (CCK) located on the South of the American River in central California. While working at CCK, James continued to enrich his knowledge of instruction by learning the latest advancements in whitewater kayaking skills.
Karan Estee
ACA Certified Whitewater Instructor
Karan began kayaking eight years ago in Salt Lake City. Her kayaking travels have taken her across the country and Mexico. A huge fan of freestyle kayaking, Karan has participated and placed in several whitewater rodeos in recent years. Karan received her ACA Certification to teach whitewater kayaking from DeRiemer Adventure Kayaking in Coloma, CA. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge, experience and great enthusiasm for the sport.
